Abernethy
Abernethy
near the junction of the Rivers Earn and Tay, west of Newburgh,
was the site probably of a Pictish monastery. The Abernethy
Round Tower, in the care of Historic Scotland, is one of only
2 round towers in the Irish style that survive in Scotland.
The upper part dates from the 11th century but the base is earlier,
and it may have been the lookout tower for a monastery.
Beside
the tower is a fragmentary Pictish symbol stone. Overlooking
the village are the extensive remains of a timber-laced Iron
Age fort, Castle Law, which was excavated at the beginning of
the 20th century. Among the finds was a bronze brooch dating
from the second
half of the 1st millennium BC.
At
Carpow, to the northeast, are the remains of a Roman fortress
and naval base near the south bank of the Tay. In 1072 Malcolm
III made a submission to William the Conqueror following William’s
invasion of Scotland. Malcolm’s son Duncan, later Duncan
II, was taken to
England as a hostage to ensure that Malcolm agreed to regard
William as his overlord.
