Aboyne
Aboyne
is a small town on the River Dee, west of Ballater, now mainly
an opulent commuter town for
Aberdeen and a tourist centre. It was also known as Charlestown
of
Aboyne after its 17th century founder Charles Gordon, Earl of
Aboyne. Its medieval castle was enlarged in 1671 and 1801, and
reduced to its nucleus in 1975. It contains the Formaston Stone,
dating from between 800 and 1000, with the Celtic mirror symbol
and an ogham inscription. The Aboyne
Highland Games,
held in September and dating from 1867, are among the most popular.
The Loch
of Aboyne, to the northwest, has
waterskiing facilities and golf.
