Perthshire
and Kinross
Lord
Chief Commissioner Adam, an eminent lawyer,
who presided over the old jury Court in Edinburgh, was
a great friend of Sir Walter Scott, who frequently visited
Blairadam, and together they visited various places of
interest in the neighbourhood along with other friends.
They called theniselves the “Blairadam Club,” and
kept
minutes of their proceedings. These papers are now
preserved in the Scottish National Library.
When
at Blairadam, Scott gathered much of the local
material for his novels, the “Abbot” and the “Monastery,”
which deal with Loch Leven. Two other members of the family
were the brothers, Robert and James Adam, who
became distinguished architects. Among other buildings
designed by them were the Adelphi in London and the
Register House and other public buildings in Edinburgh.
They also specialised in interior decorations of houses,
and to-day Adam’s mantelpieces in marble are still much
sought after and fetch a high price.
