Alexander Arbuthnot - Printer
Alexander Arbuthnot, who has often been
confused with his namesake, was a Burgess of the City of Edinburgh. With his partner Thomas Bassandyne, he printed the first Bible in Scotland. Following its success Arbuthnot was appointed printer to the church for the production of Bibles on a large scale; in this work he was greatly helped by the act of 1579 which compelled every householder to possess a copy of the Bible. He also printed the first volume of Rerum scoticarum historic by George Buchanan.
