Alloway
The
village of Alloway, south of Ayr, was the birthplace of Robert
Burns in 1759, and the cottage where he was born, built by his
father, is now a museum of his life and work. Many sites in
the area are mentioned in his poems including: Tam o’
Shanter: the Auld Brig o’ Doon to the south; Alloway Old
Kirk, a ruin in Burns’s day, features as the place where
the warlocks and witches dance. Burns’s father, William
Burnes, is buried in the churchyard. The splendid monument by
Thomas Hamilton beside the Brig o’ Doon was built between
1820 and 1830. There is a large modern visitor centre.
The
Western Lodge is Ayrshire's new country house hotel situated
in the grounds of Ayr Racecourse. The hotel boasts ten sumptuous
bedrooms with the Lodge offering excellent family accommodation.
The hotel is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding areas,
with many shops and golf courses nearby. Burns Country is also
close by offering many places of interest.
The
Ramada Ayr is situated near Ayr town centre. Whilst the
beach is nearby, the hotel has an extensive leisure centre,
and there are 22 golf courses in the area. Set in the heart
of Burns Country you can enjoy magnificent views of the Isle
of Arran.
The
Swallow Station Hotel is a fine Victorian building in the
lovely seaside town of Ayr. It offers all the virtues of the
Scottish way of life, with a fine selection of whiskies and
generous portions of food.
