Auchterarder
Auchterarder is a small town in Perthshire, a former
royal burgh, southeast of Crieff. There is little trace now
of the medieval royal castle in which Mary of Guise, widow of
James V and Regent, negotiated the Treaty of
Perth in 1559. After the Rattle of Sheriffmuir in 1716, the
town was destroyed by the retreating Jacobites so that
the army of the Duke of Argyll could not shelter in it. The
town was rebuilt and became a weaving centre.
St
Kessog’s well was said to have curative properties. The
Gleneagles Hotel and golf courses are nearby. Auchterarder Heritage
tells the history of the town and area. It was said to be ‘the
largest village in Scotland’.
Gleneagles
Hotel is a luxury AA 5 Red Star hotel, world-renowned for
golf on the King's, Queen's and PGA Centenary courses. Gleneagles
also has a unique combination of leisure activities including
riding, shooting, falconry, country club and is surrounded by
breathtaking countryside, yet within 1 hour's drive of both
Edinburgh and Glasgow airports.
