Aviemore is a village on the River Spey, northeast of
Kingussie. Originally the site of an inn on a Wade military road, it developed in the 19th century with the opening of the railway to Inverness, via Forres, in 1863. It became a junction in 1897 when the present direct line to Inverness was opened. The Aviemore Centre, of hotels, shops and leisure facilities, was built in the 1960s and is now being redeveloped, and the village is a focus for skiing and other outdoor sports in the Cairngorms.
