Ayr
Ayr
is a town located on Ayr Bay, on the Firth of Clyde, at the
mouth of the River Ayr, 12 miles southwest of Kilmarnock. It
is a former royal burgh and county town of Ayrshire, now administrative
centre of South Ayrshire Council. It has varied industries
and relies heavily on tourism. Its historically important harbour
is still used for the export of coal from the Ayrshire opencast
sites. In the 1650s Cromwell’s Model Army built a citadel,
and the Auld
Kirk of Ayr dates from the same period.
The
Auld
Brig of Ayr dates from 1491, and the splendid steeple of
the Town Buildings was built 1827-1832 by Thomas Hamilton. Robert
Burns, born in nearby Alloway, has strong links with the
town, and is commemorated in a statue in Burns Statue Square.
