Ayrshire:
Discovering a County
Ayrshire is one of the most important counties in Scotland,
with a long and proud history. In the most comprehensive book
ever published on the subject, the author covers the many and
varied parts of the county in considerable depth. The range
is impressive and includes battles, momentous events, distinguished
buildings, industry and commerce, natural history and folk tales.
Then there is the astonishing number of illustrious people that
Ayrshire has produced. The list includes Sir William Wallace,
Robert the Bruce, Robert Burns, James Boswell, Johnnie Walker,
John Loudon McAdam, Keir Hardie, Sir Alexander Fleming, Jackie
Paterson and Bill Shankly. Their stories, and those of many
other notables, are skilfully woven into the narrative. The
standard reference work on the county for years to come.
Ayrshire:
A Historical Guide
This work is a chronological history of Ayrshire from prehistoric
times to the 21st century, including maps of the region. The
region was inhabited from earliest times, and many duns, cairns
and barrows remain, in some of which important Mesolithic and
Iron Age artefacts have been found.
Ayrshire
Coast
The Ayrshire coast has it all. Magnificent scenery. Golden beaches.
Perennially popular seaside resorts. World-class golf courses.
Picturesque fishing villages. Outstanding visitor attractions.
And a long history full of dramatic stories, lore and legend.
Discover it all in the company of best selling local author
Dane Love, an acknowledged expert on the county. Illustrated
throughout by his detailed maps and line drawings, the book
will be an invaluable guide for the walker, cyclist or motorist.
Or for anyone who just wants to know more about a fascinating
part of Scotland.
Ayrshire
Idylls
The collection also describes four episodes from the life of
Robert Burns, including the creation of his famous poem Tam
o' Shanter and the start of his Clarinda correspondence. Although
very successful at the time of its first publication in 1912,
Ayrshire Idylls has not received the recognition it deserves
as a mature work by one of Scotland's leading literary figures
of the early twentieth century.
Ayrshire:
Its History and Historic Families - Volume 1
Originally published in 1908, this very readable account of
the history of Ayrshire, one of Scotland's most important counties
is a story of ups and downs, of fightings for freedom and faith,
of local and feudal jarrings and turmoils, of steady persevering
through it all on the pathway of progress. This first volume
is given to the history of the politics and social development
of the shire, while the second volume is given to the history
of the leading families. Less detailed than Paterson's History,
this is an excellent introduction to the complex family relationships
of Kyle, Cunninghame and Carrick.
Ayrshire
and Arran: Illustrated Architectural Guide (RIAS/Landmark Trust
S.)
Ayrshire has a varied range of architectural splendours. Within
the boundaries of the three provinces can be found some of the
greatest country seats of Scotland and many reminders of the
industrial past. This illustrated architectural guide looks
at the work of Robert Adam and many others.
Lost
Ayrshire
Over the centuries countless buildings have been erected and
demolished, and this informative and beautifully illustrated
book looks at a wide selection of these, from castles that have
been destroyed or replaced by modern mansions to country houses
that have succumbed due to dry rot or lack of funds for their
upkeep. He also visits at various townscapes, including the
lost everyday architecture of the burghs and villages, including
churches, banks, tollbooths, public halls, schools, shops and
houses. Ayrshire was rich in mining and other industries that
have now gone, but this book contains illustrations of the county's
lost coalmines and the associated miners' rows, as well as former
cotton mills, power stations, shipyards, factories and other
places of work. As well as lost buildings from the distant past,
Dane Love includes some more recent examples of what has been
lost. In some cases these losses are welcome, but in many regrettable,
such buildings should have been preserved and found new uses.
It is only by looking at this book that the reader will discover
just how much of Ayrshire's heritage has been lost over the
years.
