Ballater
is a small town on the River Dee near Balmoral,
with close royal associations since being a favourite of Queen
Victoria. A tourist resort of long standing after the establishment
of a spa at nearby Pannanich in 1760 by Jacobite Colonel
Francis Farquharson, it developed rapidly after the opening
of a railway from Aberdeen. The Ballater Highland Games are
held annually in August.
