Balmoral
Balmoral
Castle is a 24,000-acre estate on the River Dee, personal
property of the Oueen; it was leased from
1848 and bought for his family in 1852 by Prince Albert.
The Scottish baronial castle, replacing a 16th-century home
of the Gordons, was designed by Prince Albert and architect
William Smith (1853—1855). Oueen Victoria was passionately
attached to the estate, and her faithful servant John Brown
is commemorated in nearby Crathie
old kirkyard.
