Blair
Castle Seat of the Dukes of Atholl, near Blair Atholl.
Comyn’s Tower, built by John Comyn of Badenoch, dates
from about 1269. The castle was occupied by the Marquis of Montrose
in 1644 and in 1689 by Claverhouse; the latter’s body
was brought here after Killiecrankie. It was attacked, unsuccessfully,
by the Jacobite Lord George Murray while garrisoned by Hanoverian
troops in 1746, making it the last castle in Britain to be besieged.
Its damaged roofs were drastically simplified after 1745, but
the interior was palatially fitted out in 1751—57. The
roofs were rebarionalised by David Bryce (1869—71).
