Braemar
(Gaelic Braigh Mharr) Popular Deeside holiday resort at the
junction of the River Cluny with the Dee, in summer for the
scenery, in winter for skiing. The annual Braemar Gathering
dates in its present form from 1832, with royal patronage from
1B48. The Invercauld Arms now covers the spot where the standard
was raised by the Earl of Mar for James VIII in 1715.
Braemar
Castle, built in 1628 by the 7th Earl of Mar and later the home
of the Farquharsons, was converted to a Hanoverian barracks
in 1748. (Open to the public). There is a splendid episcopal
church by Sir Ninian Comper (1B99—1907).
