Candlemas
The Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on 2nd February. The candles burned in her honour are the legacy of a Roman pagan festival for Februa, the mother of Mars. In Scotland the day before Candlemas was dedicated to St Bride, the successor to a Celtic goddess of the same name, and the Day of Bride was the old Celtic festival of spring.
