St Columba

St Columba
(521—597)

Missionary to Scotland

Born into a Donegal chiefly family, Columba had an early reputation as a miracle-worker, despite his martial background. His exile from Ireland was said to have been a penance for belligerence. In 561 he and 12 followers were washed ashore at lona where he built his monastery and the basis for his conversion of the Picts. lona is still a venerated island today
