Court of Session

The Supreme Court in Scotland for civil matters. The Court of Session was developed during the reign of James IV and came into being officially in 1532, with the foundation of the College of Justice. The senators of the college were, and continue to be, judges of the Court of Session and the court's early procedures followed European legal practices. The earliest systematization of the law in Scotland was made by Viscount Stair (1619-95) with the publication of his Institutes of the Law of Scotland (1681); he made the office of Lord President of the Court of Session the paramount Scottish legal post. The corresponding court for criminal matters is the High Court of Justiciary.
