Culross
Culross
Village in west Fife, on the Firth of Forth, with many 17th
and 18th century buildings restored by the National Trust for
Scotland. The Palace, built in 1597 for mine-owner George Bruce
of Culross, later of Carnock; died in1625, and the Tolbooth,
dating originally from 1626, are two reminders of Culross’s
prosperous trading days.
Culross
Abbey was founded for Cistercian monks in 1215, but a religious
community existed here many centuries earlier. Part of the abbey
church serves as the parish church, and contains a remarkable
monument to George Bruce of Carnock.
