Author and artist Dorothy Dunnett was born on August 25, 1923, in Dunfermline. She was educated at Gillespie's High School for Girls in Edinburgh and from 1950 pursued a career as a professional portrait painted, exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy on many occasions.

Her first historical novel Game of Kings was published in 1961. Dunnett produced five more volumes in the same series, entitled the 'Lymond Chronicles' over the next 15 years, while also writing detective novels under her maiden name, Dorothy Halliday.

She also produced 'King Hereafter' on Macbeth, before writing her second series of historical fiction, the eight volume 'House of Niccolo'. As well as writing, Dunnett led a busy life in public service and in 1992 was awarded an QBE for services to literature.

She was married to former Scotsman editor Alastair Dunnett, who died in 1998. She herself passed away in 2001, leaving two sons, a grandson and a grand-daughter.
