Dumfries Angel
Robert Burns, the poet, was attending church in Dumfries. Sitting in the pew in front of him was a young lady, a Miss Ainslie. The text of the sermon was a ''fierce denunciation of obstinate sinners'. Burns, always with an eye to helping the ladies, noticed the young girl frantically thumbing through the pages of her Bible for the text. Scribbling a verse hurriedly, he handed it to her. It read:
Fair Maid, you need not take the hint,
Nor idle texts pursue;
'Twas guilty sinners that he meant,
Not angels - such as you!
