Dunkeld and Birnam

Birnam Photo Album

Birnam and its sister town Dunkeld sit on opposite banks of the fast flowing waters of the River Tay in Perthshire. Linking the two towns is Thomas Telford's stone bridge. On one of her regular holidays to Birnam, Beatrix Potter wrote the famous letter which was to be published worldwide as "The Tale Of Peter Rabbit". In Birnam's Beatrix Potter Garden, you'll meet many of her favourite characters.

This is an especially beautiful part of Perthshire with some lovely walks by the River Tay, alongside the River Braan to the Hermitage or for the more energetic, a climb up Birnam Hill through the woods that were, as we all know, to spell doom for Macbeth. In the two towns and surrounding countryside, there is no end to the wealth of interest around Birnam and Dunkeld.

Dunkeld, Aberfeldy and Glen Almond (Explorer S.) This excellent Dunkeld, Aberfeldy and Glen Almond map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The main advantages of this map are the geographical design of the sheetlines to capture the best local Dunkeld and Birnam coverage, and the coverage of a larger area for value for money. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Dunkeld, Aberfeldy and Glen Almond.
