Duns Scotus

Duns Scotus
(c. 1265—c.1308)

Philosopher and theologian

Franciscan John Duns Scotus was among the greatest medieval thinkers, his ideas
emphasising the primacy of the individual and of individual will. He fell from favour in the 16th century, by when his followers had acquired the name ‘Dunses’, meant to denote their dullness and obstinacy, and from which evolved the modern word ‘dunce’. Duns Scotus has since been canonised.
