Easy Club

A social club for debating political and literary matters, founded on 12 May 1712 by Allan Ramsay and a group of his acquaintances. Each of the 12 members was expected to adopt a literary pseudonym, Ramsay's being 'Isaac Bickerstaff, after Jonathan Swift's fictional creation, although it was later changed to the more patriotic 'Gawin Douglas'. The club had sentimental, Jacobite leanings and Ramsay was its poet laureate.
