English
Cottages (Country S.)
Cottages Of England. Capturing
the English genius for mixing practicality with beauty, English
Cottages is a rich visual anthology of the evolution of the
cottage. Ranging from some of England s earliest dwellings,
built without plans and with whatever was to hand, to purpose
built railway or canal cottages, from model cottages built by
wealthy philanthropists to the bucolic follies of the eighteenth-century
rich.
Victorian
Cottages (Country S.)
Cottages Of England. The
Victorians idealised country life as a rural idyll far away
from the smoke and grime of the growing cities. Artists of the
late nineteenth century sought to perpetuate this nostalgic
vision, and their work found its greatest expression in images
of cottages and cottage life. Cerulean skies, thatched roofs,
flower gardens and carefree children playing beside the cottage
gate epitomize this delightful genre. Drawing on the watercolours
of Helen Allingham, Myles Birket Foster and Charles Wilson and
the writings of Flora Thompson and Thomas Hardy, Andrew Clayton-Payne
describes the cottages themselves, how they were built and organized
internally and the farming and domestic traditions that determined
the cottagers' lives. Harvesting, cider-making and wash day
are a few of the activities he describes, as well as some of
the more unusual customs associated with the 'cottage pig' and
beehives. By contrasting the truth with the reality he finds
that these nostalgic cottage paintings often convey more of
the truth than a casual glance might suggest.
Cottage
Architecture (Discovering S.)
Cottages Of England. Country
cottages have an almost universal appeal. They are probably
the most popular of all building types. Yet how well do we know
what we like? How much is understood about their origins, nature,
use and form? The myths and misapprehensions about cottages
are equalled only by the extraordinary variety of different
ways in which they were built. This book will aid the recognition,
understanding and historical interpretation of the wealth of
surviving cottages in England and Wales. Their changing forms,
quality and methods of building are explained and illustrated,
along with the great range of regional differences. Architectural
aspects are brought into touch with social and economic ones,
such as the identity, motives and practices of people who once
provided and occupied cottages.
