Fort George
Fort
George was originally sited on the hill now crowned by the 19th
century Inverness Castle, it proved vulnerable in the 1745 Jacobite
Rising, and was replaced by a huge artillery fort and barracks,
built between 1748 and 1769 as part of the Hanoverian government’s
preparations to quell the next Jacobite rebellion in the Scottish
Highlands.
The
finest complete 18th century artillery fortress in Europe, the
complex covers 16 acres to the east of Inverness, jutting out
into the Moray Firth. It was designed by William Skinner and
the building contract went to William Adam, being carried out
by his sons after his death in 1748. Politically it was already
irrelevant by the time of its completion and was never used
tor
defensive purposes. It was refurbished as an army base in the
1960s and is in the care of Historic Scotland; much of it is
open to the public and it contains the Regimental Museum of
the Queens Own Highlanders.
