George Moodie - Shipbuilder

Born in East Wemyss, George Moodie (1829-1923) is credited for his role in the building of one of the UK's most famous ships, the "Cutty Sark'. He became her first captain in 1869 staying in the post for three years sailing her all over the world. Moodie started as an apprentice shipbuilder at the age of 16 before studying navigation in Dundee where he gained his Masters Certificate. Before retiring in 1891 he served as a steamship captain on the New York to London line for 19 years.

He founded the Methil Bowling Club in 1900. Married to Janet Cassels in 1854 they had four children together. He died aged 94 and is buried in Methilmill Cemetery.
