Dunkeld
is an ideal base location if you wish to
Tour Scotland or Tour Perthshire. Dunkeld, the fort of the Celts
played a vital role in the early history of Scotland, both as a
Royal and Religious centre. It was the original seat of the chief
bishop of the mysterious kingdom of the Picts;
Scotland's first king, Kenneth MacAlpin, built a stone church here
early in the 9th century to house the relics of St
Columba; and under King David I it was the centre of Christianity
in all of Scotland. The present building was constructed between 1315 and 1501. The cathedral was plundered by the Vikings, and vandalized
by the stern followers of the Reformation. Dunkeld
is a picturesque and delightful town which contains a wealth of
interest, and is an ideal base for walking,
fishing, golfing,
and many other sporting
activities. Dunkeld November Photographs.

Tucked
away at the foot of thickly wooded hills in Perthshire, you will
discover one of Scotland's gems - the cathedral
town of Dunkeld. And that's not all. Resting on the opposite
bank of the river Tay is the Victorian village of Birnam.
Together the beautifully restored buildings and rich heritage of
these Highland Perthshire towns are an inspiration for lovers of
history, the arts, live music, walking and the outdoors.
Ossian's Hall, a folly built in 1758 for the 2nd Duke of Atholl, provides a spectacular view over a waterfall. Ossian's cave, named after a hermit, can also be visited.

Kenmore, Edzell Castle, Stirling, Pitlochry, Crieff, Aberfeldy, Dundee, and a hundred points
of interest in between. The Dunkeld area truly makes for an excellent

Scotland the Autobiography. Two thousand years years of Scottish History by Those Who Saw It. This is a vivid, wide-ranging and engrossing account of Scotland's history, composed of eye-witness accounts by those who experienced it first-hand. Contributors range from Tacitus, Mary Queen of Scots and Oliver Cromwell to Adam Smith, David Livingstone and Billy Connolly. These include not just key historic moments, from Bannockburn to the opening of the new parliament, but testimonies like that of the eight-year-old factory worker who was dangled by his ear out of a third-floor window for making a mistake; the survivors of Culloden, who wished perhaps that they had died on the field; the breakthrough moment for John Logie Baird, inventor of television; and, the genesis of great works of literature recorded by Conan Doyle and Roberrt Louis Stevenson. From the battlefield to the sports field, we have moments of glory or disaster, along with wonderfully readable insights into the everyday life of Scotland through the millennia. This is living, accessible history is told by crofters, criminals, servants, house-wives, poets, journalists, nurses, politicians, prisoners, comedians, sportsmen and many more.
