James Clerk Maxwell

James Clerk Maxwell
(1831-1879)

Physicist

A brilliant theoretical physicist whose immense intellect and work rank him on a par with Newton and Einstein. His Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism examined the
nature of electromagnetism and laid the way for the work of Einstein and Planck. Other diverse research examined the nature of Saturn’s rings, whose composition he proved mathematically, to the perception of colour and a demonstration of colour photography, using as his subject a piece of tartan ribbon.
