James Douglas
(c. 1286—1330)

Commander in the Wars of Independence

Robert the First's lieutenant and right-hand man, Douglas was with the king constantly throughout his darkest period in 1306—7. He raided the north of England regularly, and his martial feats in the War of Independence make thrilling reading. At Robert’s request, Douglas took the dead king’s heart on pilgrimage to the Holy Land but he was killed en route fighting the Moors in Andalucia.
