James Graham (1612—1650) - Marquis of Montrose

5th Earl and 1st Marquis of Montrose, he was educated at the University of St Andrews. He succeeded to his father's title in 1628 as the 5th Earl, and was created 1st Marquis in 1644. Although he was an early supporter of the National Covenant, he was opposed to the policies of Archibald Campbell, Earl of Argyll, and was imprisoned in Edinburgh in 1641. During the Civil War he fought on the side of Charles I and raised a Highland and Irish army with Alasdair Macdonald. Despite a series of victories Montrose's army was finally defeated at the Battle of Philiphaugh on 13th September 1645. Montrose spent the next five years wandering in Europe, attempting, unsuccessfully, to gain support for the Royalist cause. He returned to Scotland in 1650 but was defeated at the Battle of Carbisdale on 27 April and executed in Edinburgh on 21 May.
