J. J. R. Macleod
(1876-1935)

Co-discoverer of insulin

Macleod and his University of Toronto colleague, Dr Frederick Banting, led the team that identified the pancreatic malfunction in diabetes and isolated the hormone which controlled blood sugar levels; Macleod called the hormone ‘insulin’. In 1923 the pair won the Nobel Prize for Medicine, which they shared with their fellow researchers.
