merchant and distiller
Son of a licensed grocer who followed into and transformed his
family business. He and his brother, Tommy, were the first to
bottle whiskies for sale (they had always been sold from the
keg, in licensed premised). They popularised blends, making
whisky more palatable and accepted outside Scotland. Their firm
joined the Distillers Company conglomerate in 1925 and Dewars
White Label is still one of the worlds best-selling Scotches.
