John Grierson
(1898—1972)

Film-maker

A pioneering figure in non-fiction film-making and one of the greatest directors and producers of his day, he became known as ‘the father of documentary’. Some of his most famous work was done at the GPO, such as the superb Night Mail, with commentary by W. H. Auden. He worked internationally during and after the war.
