John
Hamilton
John
Hamilton had them all to deal with during his ministry, as well
as differences of opinion with some of his parishioners on political
matters. Robertson of Strowan, whose “big” house
was at Fearnan, was a Jacobite which the minister was not. This
difference of opinion can be seen in a letter which Robertson
wrote to his minister: “Since my tenants are willing to
hear a person of your persuasion, I do not know by what inspiration,
I hope you will not see them dispossessed of their seats in
the Kirk which are well known. They should be let sit easy,
and have elbow room, lest possession cause rupture among you.
Let every man possess his paternal inheritance, from the throne
in Westminster Abbey to the cobbler’s sate in the Kirk
of Kenmore”.
Hamilton’s Manse was becoming ruinous, but,in spite of
many appeals, it was to be another thirty years before anything
was done about it. During the twenty years of his ministry Hamilton
had much to contend with. He was a man of great Christian fortitude
and stuck to his task with a good courage.
