Social
Work
Times
were still hard, however, and the Kirk Session of Kenmore Kirk
continued its social work during the ministry of John Hamilton.
Extracts from the Session Minutes tell of money having been
given at various times; for “a poor blind girl called
Janet MacLean — 3 shillings”; “for poor
idiots”; “to a poor boy at Lawers to buy a bible”
(he had to return it when he had read it); “for a poor
paralytic man in Fearnan”. The Elder in charge of the
Poor’s Box was now known as the Box Master and hardly
a session meeting took place, without some help being given
to
those in need. Other records speak of another aspect of life
on the lochside. The Session is shown in its judicial role when
Elspeth McGorrie complained “of being accused of witchcraft
by John Maclntyre. Both rebuked”.
