Charles Macintosh
(1766—1843)

Inventor of waterproof materials

Most of Macintosh’s work was done in the bleaching and dyeing industry but his main claim to fame was his invention and patenting in 1823 of a fabric-waterproofing process which was used in the manufacture of rubberised coats. His invention ensured the survival of his name as a household word.
