Perthshire
and Kinross
For
many generations members of this family have
occupied important positions in Scotland as lawyers and
as clergymen. No fewer than three of them became
Lords of Session, Sir James Moncreiff was appointed
Lord Justice Clerk in 1869 and in 1874 was raised to the
Peerage, with the title “Baron Moncreiff of Tullibole.”
For a time also he held the position of Lord Lieutenant
of our County.
At
least six other members of this family were ministers
of the Church, notably Sir Henry Moncreiff, who was
minister of St. Cuthbert’s Church, Edinburgh, in 1775.
Another of the Moncreiffs, Rev. Sir Henry Wellwood
Moncreiff, B.L., left the Church of Scotland a few weeks
after the Disruption, because he did not agree with that
Church’s policy then of intruding ministers upon Con-
gregations against the wishes of their members. He
became a minister of the Free Church then, and later was
minister of Free St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh.
