Nora Wattie
(1899-1994)

Pioneer in social medicine

One of history’s unsung heroines and heroes, whose lives profoundly affect those they touch, Nora Wattie was a doctor specialising in ante-natal and neonatal health. She worked to alleviate the suffering of women and their babies who were infected with sexually transmitted diseases by husbands returning home after the war. The maternity and child welfare service she set up and ran over three decades in Glasgow, with its ante-natal care and health-visitor system, gained national and international recognition.
