Old Lenzie

Old Lenzie

Old Lenzie Old Lenzie. Lenzie's leafy streets and solid villas suggest that it has a long history, but in fact it originated as a brand new commuter suburb following the opening of the railway line between Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1842. Development was slow to begin with, but took off in the 1870s when many streets and houses were built. The pictures in this book illustrate Lenzie's shops, businesses and homes, along with sporting groups including the rugby, bowling, cricket, tennis and golf clubs. The histories of Woodilee Hospital and Lenzie Academy are included too, while Auchinloch, with its mining legacy, features in four photographs. Spider Bridge (now demolished), a spectacular locomotive derailment, harvesting at Wester Gallowhill Farm, and a group of skaters on the Gadloch are some of the other items included.
