Perthshire
Visitor Attractions
The
Perthshire Visitor attractions listed here aim to help visitors
understand and enjoy the natural world. Their exhibitions interpret
the relationships between landscape, climate and wildlife, and
explain the influence of humans on the environment. At them
you can find out what species of plant and animal are present
in the area and how best to see them. Some also have hides and
nature trails, where there is an opportunity of directly viewing
a
variety of notable species — from nesting ospreys to
alpine wildflowers.
Visitor
centres are a good place to take visiting
friends and relatives - who will soon become jealous
as they realise what a wealth of natural history we
have on our doorsteps. When it is too wet or windy to
be outdoors, they provide somewhere with shelter and
a focus of interest, If the weather is fine, a stop at one
can easily be combined with a walk in the surrounding
area. For the less mobile, a visitor centre can bring
alive a world which is otherwise difficult to access.
Most visitor centres are worth repeated visits. There
is always something new to catch your eye, and as the
spring and summer progress it is possible tO observe
natural cycles, such as migrant birds returning and
nesting then their young fledging. Often the centres
undergo refurbishment during the winter and there are
new things to see when they reopen in the spring, as
at Loch of the Lowes where there is a brand new hide.
Some of the centres described below also run
ranger-led events.
