Scottish seamen have long regarded porpoises as
fortune-bringing creatures, which should never be
harmed. Some said they kept sharks away, and to see a group of them playing near a ship was a good sign for the trip as they would lead the ship to good catches or a safe port; but their more boisterous gambols foretold a gale to come.
