Robert Cadell - (1788-1849) - Publisher

Publisher and partner (from 1811) of Archibald Constable. He was born on 16th December 1788 at Cockenzie, East Lothian, and he died on 20 January 1849 at Ratho, West Lothian. After Constable's financial crash of 1826, which
ruined Sir Walter Scott, Cadell set about republishing Scott's novels in uniform editions and was the publisher of the last novels; by becoming Scott's sole publisher he was able to revive his own and Scott's fortunes. John Gibson Lockhart in his Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott (1837-8) wrote of Cadell's 'delicate and watchful' attention to his author.
