Robert Riddell - (1755-1794) Friend of Robert Burns

Soldier and owner of the estate of Glenriddell on which stood his house of Friar's Carse. He was a friend of Robert Burns and shared with him an enthusiasm for collecting songs. For him Burns wrote the Glenriddell Manuscripts. Their friendship ended following a drunken revel in Friar's Carse in late 1793. Riddell composed a number of fiddle tunes and published a collection of Border and Galloway airs in 1794.
