Fountains
of Rome
Among the most recognizable and best-loved features of Rome
are its fountains. The many varied examples that grace the urban
fabric of the "Eternal City" were designed by some
of Europe's greatest artists and architects, including Domenico
Fontana, Giacomo della Porta, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Nicola
Salvi. Built at enormous expense, and often requiring new water-feeds
to be constructed from miles outside Rome, the fountains were
important elements of the urban renewal undertaken by the papal
rulers, who were concerned with the creation of a new city which
would demonstrate their triumphant and undisputed authority,
echoing, where necessary, the heritage of Imperial Rome. A wide-ranging
survey of these remarkable monuments is presented in this work,
which includes colour photographs taken both at night and by
day. The fountains are described individually, from the story
of their commission and creation to stylistic and technical
analyses. Maps and contemporary documents complete the survey.
Rome
(Photopocket S.)
Rome Photopocket presents a portrait of a once imperial city
that also manages to capture the tenor of everyday life. Stunning
photographs of monuments and architectural landmarks such as
the Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain are interspersed with images
of young lovers and bustling crowds to reveal the phenomenal
concentration of history, legend, and modernity that defines
Rome. Rome

Splendours
of the Roman World
This title celebrates the riches of the Roman civilization with
photographs of monuments, art treasures, cities and landscapes.
Imperial architecture and statues, frescoes and mosaics, metal
work and jewellery are all featured. The accompanying text offers
an insight into Roman society and ranges from military campaigns
to daily customs, from works of art to household objects. Offering
an overview of Rome's turbulent history, it also discusses the
lives of everyday Romans, from their housing and clothing to
entertainment, helping to construct an overall picture of a
surprisingly sophisticated world. The book also contains a tour
of the major sites of Italy and the empire, from Britannia in
the west to the caravan cities of the Near East.
