Ronald C. Munro Ferguson - Governor of Australia

Lord Novar, Ronald C. Munro Ferguson, who began and ended his days at the family home on Raith Estate, was in his time Governor General of Australia and Secretary of State for Scotland.

Born in 1860, he was gazetted to the Grenadier Guards in 1880, but soon abandoned the army for politics, and entered parliament in 1884 as MP for Ross and Cromarty. In 1894 he was made a Junior Lord of the Treasury but still found time to be elected Provost of Kirkcaldy from 1901-1914. He was created Privy Councillor in 1910 and given the freedom of Musselburgh in 1911.

In 1914 he was appointed Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of Australia, and on returning to Britain in 1920 he was made Viscount Novar of Raith, subsequently serving as Secretary of State for Scotland from 1922-24. In 1923 he was given the freedom of Edinburgh and in 1926 was made a Knight of the Thistle. He died at Raith on March 30, 1933.
