St
Mungo
(c. 520-612)
Patron
saint of Glasgow
Kentigern, nicknamed Mungo (meaning dear friend),
was the son of St Thenew and was brought up under the influence
of St Serf. He became a missionary, building on the Christian
legacy left in southern Scotland by the Romans and preaching
in Strathclyde, Cumbria and Wales, meeting St David and St Columba
on his travels. He was buried in his cathedral in Glasgow and
as the citys patron saint, appears on its arms along with
pictorial mementoes of his miracles.
