The Betrayal of Alastair MacGregor of Glenstrae

To the Earls of Argyll and Atholl were now entrusted the active proceedings to be taken against the (MacGregor) rebels, who, after a brave and stubborn resistance, were at last overcome. Early in the year 1604 Alastair MacGregor surrendered himself to Argyll on the condition that the latter should grant him a safe-conduct into England, that he might there lay his case before the
King, and crave his mercy. What Argyll did, however, was to send him over the Border and then immediately bring him back to Edinburgh, where, after a few days, he and some hostages whom he had previously delivered up to
Argyll were hanged, ‘himself being chieff he was hangit his awin hicht above the rest of his friendis’
