Bunkers

Golf Bunker

Why are sand traps called bunkers? Bunkers come from the Scottish word bonker, meaning a chest or box were coal is kept, usually dug into the side of a hill.

Often cows would graze in marshlands adjacent to the old links courses, standing along the dunes and creating a depression that reminded Scottish players of these chests, and eventually these areas became known as bunkers.
