(Lived c. 400)
The first missionary sent out to Scotland from Rome to convert
the people to Christianity. He chose Roman Carlisle as his first
base, eventually setting up his church in Whithorn. He built
on some of the networks the Romans had left, converting in the
south west, as far north as Perth and west into Ireland. Ninian
is said to have been buried at Whithorn, which later became
one of the foremost centres of pilgrimage in Scotland.
