Tay Bridges
The
railway bridge across the River Tay at Dundee,
two miles long, was built by the engineers W H and Crawford
Barlow and was the longest bridge in Britain. It replaced the
earlier bridge (1818) by Thomas Bouch, destroyed in a gale in
1879, with the loss of a train and 75 lives. This was one of
the most disastrous structural failures in the UK. The event
was immortaliscd in a poem by William
McGonagall. The road bridge, by engineers W A Fairhurst
and Partners, completed in 1966, is over 1.4 miles long.
