Tour Antwerp

Antwerp ShophopperAntwerp Shophopper As the fashion capital of Belgium, Antwerp is a shopper's paradise. When you visit Belgium, it is in Antwerp, not Brussels, that you will find the pick of the boutiques which reflect the city's long history of international trading, particularly in fashion and the textile industry. This compact guide to shopping in Antwerp provides a complete guide to all the shops in the city: the main shopping streets of the Meir and Huidevettersstraat offer the international chainstores along with department stores and boutiques; the De Wilde Zee is a warren of pedestrianised streets in the city centre lined with boutiques and specialist shops; upmarket boutiques, designer stores and antique shops found along Schutterhofstraat, Steenhouwersvest and Leopoldstraat; the renovated warehouses of the trendy Het Zuid (southern district) near Vlaamsedaai and Leopold de Waelplaats offer fashion houses and restaurants. Bric-a-brac, curiosities and old books and prints can be found in the shops on Hoogstraat, Kloosterstraat and Wolstraat; Flea markets are held on Lijnwaadmarkt (Saturdays) and Sint-Jansvliet (Sundays) and the Rubens Market held in August each year is a wonderful spectacle with the traders dressing in period costume. A shopaholic's guide to the clothes stores and designer brand boutiques in 'the fashion capital' of Belgium, it also includes a selection of interesting hotels, restaurants and cafes. Tour Antwerp.

Flemish Cities Explored AntwerpFlemish Cities Explored: Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Mechelen, Leuven and Ostend (Pallas for Pleasure) The historic Belgian cities of Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Mechelen, Leuven and Ostend are some of the most beautiful and fascinating in Europe. The remarkable blossoming of Flemish art and architecture in the 15th century, and the rich history of a region at the crossroads of European history and trade have created an extraordinary diversity of sights in a relatively small area, not to mention an appetite for enjoyment that is revealed in some of the best cooking, brewing and general joie de vivre in Europe. "Flemish Cities Explored" guides the visitor through six cities on a series of walks that cover everything of interest from art galleries and museums to secret convents and convivial cafes. A clear and informative map accompanies each of the walks, together with illustrations of the beautiful, the quirky and the unmissable.

WalcherenWalcheren (Battleground Europe) This latest addition to the successful Second World War Battleground Europe Series describes the fierce campaign, codenamed INFATUATE, mounted in November 1944 to clear the way through to the port of Antwerp. This was a vital task as the Allies lacked sufficient port facilities to provide for the increasing quantities of war supplies required as the advance eastwards took them closer to Germany. There was a danger of lines of communication becoming over-extended. A leading role was played by British Royal Marine commandos but all who took part in both D Day and this landing regarded the former as a picnic! As the book vividly describes, the Germans fought with extraordinary courage against overwhelming odds and refused to surrender although all must have known defeat was inevitable. The winter weather was another major problem and the terrain was extremely difficult.
